Lopez

Bingo!

Bingo players wanted for a fun time at Woodmen Hall on Saturdays. Warm Up is at 6:45 p.m., regular session 7 p.m. There is a $15 buy-in for 13 games, $5 progressive blackout, payout currently at $175. Regular games pay out $15, specials can payout more. Proceeds to benefit the Lopez Senior Center.

Lopez AA Meetings

Lopez AA meetings at the Children’s Center: Monday, Big Book, 7:30 p.m.; Friday, 12×12, 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, noon. Al-Anon family group meets every Friday morning at 9:00 a.m. in the Parish Hall of Grace Episcopal Church. Women’s meeting Wednesday, 4-5 p.m. (call 468-4648 or 468-0541 for location).

Tai Chi on Lopez

Lopez Senior Center presents beginning and advanced Tai Chi at Woodmen Hall every Wednesday. Both levels meet at 9 a.m. for a combined class. For more information, call Jerry at 468-4709.

Pool meeting

Friends of Lopez Island Pool will meet at the Lopez Library on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 6 p.m. Join them as they work on a project for the Christmas Bazaar! Check out what they are doing in regard to the land, county, fundraising and feasibility studies. So much news. So much happening…Be part of the pool.

Stormwater meeting

The Subcommittee on Stormwater of the San Juan County Council will hold an informational and feedback meeting on Lopez on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 4-5:30 p.m. at the Lopez Library. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the subcommittee’s alternatives for the fee structure for the new stormwater funding ordinance that will be recommended to the full County Council. The public is invited to attend.

Garfield Jazz Ensemble

Seattle’s award-winning Garfield High School Jazz Ensemble, led by director Clarence Acox, will perform Saturday, October 18, 2:30 p.m., at Lopez Center. The Ensemble is a 30-member jazz band comprised of Seattle students from a variety of cultural and economic backgrounds. It recently took second place in the 2008 Essentially Ellington competition in New York City. The event benefits the Lopez School Music Advocacy Foundation. Tickets are $15; Lopez Island students are admitted free, but seating is limited. Tao of Disengaging from Verbal Attack

The lecture “Tao of Disengaging from Verbal Attack” with psychotherapist Morgan Randall, MA will be at Pyramidion Books, Eastsound, Saturday Oct. 11, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. $35, including light lunch. Call for information, 376-5552.

Orcas Island Marine Science Lecture Series

On Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 7 p.m., Eric Eisenhardt of the SeaDoc Society will discuss the effectiveness of eight voluntary no-fishing areas set up in San Juan County over ten years ago to help recover depleted fish populations. This is the first lecture of the 2008/09 marine science lecture series designed for the general public. The program begins at 7 p.m. at the Camp Orkila Marine Salmon Center and is free. Please park in the upper parking lot at Camp Orkila. Shuttle service from the parking lot to the talk is available before and after the lecture.

Saunders Trail Work Parties

There will be two work parties for the Saunders property on San Juan Island sponsored by the Land Bank. Thursday, Oct. 16 from 9 a.m. to noon and Saturday, Oct. 18 from 9 a.m. to noon. Bring: water, gloves, loppers, and any grubbing tools (hoe, Mcleod, rake, pulaski, etc). Wear: sturdy boots, warm layers and/or rain gear (depending on the weather!) Have: FUN!. Where: The “Saunders” Property on Cattle Point Road. Heading south on Cattle Point Road, turn LEFT on Rosler and immediately RIGHT through the gate into the property. Look for the Land Bank truck! Touch a Truck

Island Rec’s first ever Touch a Truck event is just around the corner. On Thursday, Oct. 16 at the Country Fairgrounds from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. kids and adults will get a chance to explore ambulances, fire trucks, backhoes and so many other big rigs. This family friendly event allows children a chance to climb into the driver’s seat, honk the horn and explore different large equipment up close and personal. Waldron

The Waldron community meeting is every 2nd Saturday of the month in the schoolhouse. The group meets at 2:30 p.m. in the winter, and 4 p.m. in spring and summer.
