A banking blunder, missing medicine and errant emails | SJC Sheriff’s log

The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office responded to the following calls.

Jan. 29

• An Orcas Island deputy arrested a subject for reckless driving, assault in the third degree on a peace officer and resisting arrest. The subject was booked into jail in Friday Harbor.

• A Lopez Island deputy was given found property. The item was booked into evidence and the incident was documented.

• A Lopez Island deputy was dispatched to a vandalism call. The incident was documented.

• An Orcas Island deputy was made aware of a fraud (phishing) attempt. The scammers sent a text message, with a link, claiming to be the Internal Revenue Service.

• An Orcas Island deputy responded to a hit-and-run accident at a business. The driver who left the scene without providing any information was later found and questioned about the accident. No vehicles were damaged, and no one was injured. The incident was documented.

• An Orcas Island deputy responded to a trespass call in the Eastsound area. After learning about the facts of the incident, it was determined to be a civil issue. Subsequently, a trespass warning letter was issued and the incident was documented.

Jan. 30

• A Lopez Island deputy was dispatched to a property damage call and a report was taken.

• A Lopez Island deputy was dispatched to a fraud call. The incident was documented.

• Orcas Island deputies responded to a vandalism call in the Eastsound area. When deputies arrived, they encountered a person experiencing a mental health crisis. Subsequently, they were arrested for malicious mischief in the third degree, domestic violence.

• San Juan deputies responded to a report of an order violation. One individual was issued a criminal citation for a protection order violation.

• A Lopez Island deputy was dispatched to a mental health call. The incident was documented.

• San Juan deputies located an individual with a no-bail warrant. After approximately 13 minutes of knocking on the individual’s door, the individual exited their residence and was arrested. They were booked into jail without incident.

Jan. 31

• A deputy was dispatched to an animal problem. The deputy made contact with the caller. The caller’s dog had been attacked by another dog. One person was arrested and cited for public nuisance, dog bite, attack, and chase of a domestic animal.

• An Orcas Island deputy called the concerned party about a fraudulent Venmo payment from his account in the Olga area. After speaking with him the deputy learned that the payment was disputed, and the money was returned to his account. The incident was documented.

• A deputy was contacted about a communication call. The person was receiving unwanted emails containing pornography on work email. An informational report was taken.

• A Lopez deputy responded to a citizen assist call concerning an interfamily conflict. The incident was documented.

• Lopez deputies responded when an elderly individual’s medical alarm was activated. The individual informed them that the alarm activation was a mistake and declined any medical assistance.

Feb. 1

• A deputy on Orcas Island conducted a traffic stop. The driver was issued a notice of infraction for speeding, 60 mph in a 40 mph zone.

• Orcas Island deputies responded to a death investigation. The investigation revealed no suspicious activity.

• A San Juan deputy stopped a vehicle for an illegal U-turn into an angled parking space. The driver was issued an infraction for no insurance, and multiple warnings were given.

Feb. 2

• A deputy issued an infraction for a dog running at large, third offense.

• An anonymous tip was received about a no-contact order violation. The matter will be investigated as much as the limited information allows.

Feb. 3

• A Lopez resident reported the unauthorized use of a debit card at a local store. The matter is being investigated.

• The Sheriff’s Office took a report of a theft of prescription medication from a residence. The incident was documented as there were no workable leads.

• A vessel ran aground in heavy weather. The two vessel occupants went into the water. The United States Coast Guard rescued one person and recovered another who was unresponsive. Lifesaving efforts were performed on the second person without success.

• An inmate of the San Juan County Sheriff’s holding facility had a medical issue and was transported to Peace Island Medical Center by EMS.

Feb. 4

• A Lopez Island deputy was contacted at the Lopez Sub-Station for a citizen assist. The incident was documented.

• Lopez Island deputies received an anonymous tip regarding threats. An investigation was conducted, and the incident was documented.

• A deputy on San Juan Island responded to a medical call and assisted San Juan EMS.
