4th annual Woodmen Hall auction planned for May 30

Time flies.  That may be a cliché but a very appropriate one when it comes to Woodmen Hall.

Time flies.  That may be a cliché but a very appropriate one when it comes to Woodmen Hall.

This year will be the fourth Friends of Woodmen Hall Memorial Weekend Auction.

Woodmen Hall was constructed at the turn of the last century by fraternal association of The Modern Woodmen of America.

In 1941 the building was sold to The Commercial Club, the precursor of the Chamber of Commerce, for $1.

After World War II, it was purchased by the Hoey-Kjargaard American Legion Post 185, again for $1.  Fast forward to 2003 and we see the hall once more being sold for $1.00.  This time to Lopez Senior Services.  It was decided that the name of the building would revert to Woodmen Hall to honor the community members who built it.

Over the years the hall has undergone several renovations.  A false front was removed;  an annex was built in 1975 to provide a kitchen and dining area; windows were added on the east side; and the stage was constructed.

The building has long been used for dances, meetings, weddings, potlucks, movies, plays, and musical events to name just a few.

In 2006, The Friends of Woodmen Hall was formed with the goal of ensuring that the hall remains available for the entire community.  For nearly five years, The Friends have run a variety of fund raising events, providing over $100,000 for the renovation of the building.

Once again the traditional community events are happening at the hall.  So why do we need another auction you ask?  The Friends have always had big plans for the stage area, and this year its fund-raising efforts focus around that.  The first project will be to replace the curtains.  Other improvements such as lighting, sound, and stage upgrades are being planned.

The Friends fourth annual Auction and Yard Sale at Woodmen Hall will be on May 30.

Come find great deals, tasty food, and funny auctioneers:  Robert Herrmann, Larry Cochran, and Dave Stratton.

There will be an assortment of enticing items such as dinner with Nick and Sarah Jones, IKEA deck chairs, household and vintage goods.

The Friends are still seeking donations of items or services for the auction, yard sale, and silent auction.  By donating and/or purchasing you will help the group achieve its goals.

Anyone interested in becoming a member, helping with the auction, or helping with other projects. shouldcontact The Friends. This winter/fall, there are plans for a new event, possibly a dinner and play.

What may the future hold for The Friends?  Someday, with more help and more funds, it may even consider tackling the upstairs.  Stay tuned for the next phase.
