The San Juan County Opioid Settlement Committee created OARS with community feedback and input from the treatment community, justice system and affected families.
“This pilot program is meant to provide material supports to victims of the opioid crisis from settlements paid by pharmaceutical companies,” said Richard Uri, San Juan County Opioid Settlement Committee chair. “It is our hope to encourage active recovery and assist in providing stability for all family members affected by the opioid crisis.”
OARS was envisioned to make recovery sustainable. Treatment and other transitional phases can be disruptive and distracting, so this financial coverage can help recipients focus on their recovery. The program would support people with opioid use disorder by helping with costs associated with their recovery, other than treatment. This would include things like housing, utilities, child care, transportation and pro-social healthy activities (like swim lessons). The financial support will last for 90 days, and the recovery process will be monitored monthly. Families where children are with other family members (kinship) could also apply for this program if the primary applicant is the parent in recovery.
This program is made possible by the payouts from lawsuits against pharmaceutical companies. The Opioid Settlement Committee reserves the right to approve expenses as needed.
