Woodmen Hall was the wonderful venue where 10 band members of “Tiempo de Lopez” performed Jan. 15.

This performance raised funds for donation to the Family Resource Center. The attendees represented all age groups, dancing and enjoying the music.

This was the first use of the new professional-quality sound system at Woodmen Hall. It sounded great and the acoustics were good. Many positive comments were made about this wonderful 1898 building.

Hawk Arps said, “It was really heartwarming to pack Woodmen hall with all ages of the community dancing together again. They not only resuscitated the old building nicely, but the sound in there was a great improvement over what it used to be.” Two organizations have worked together for approximately four years to bring about the improved use and ownership of Woodmen Hall by Senior Services.

Friends of Woodmen Hall was formed as a 501c (3) specifically to provide funds for restoration, improvements and acquisition of useful and needed items. The stage improvements include professional curtains, a high quality P.A. and sound system. Next on the list is proper stage lighting and acoustic treatment.

The second organization, Lopez Senior Advisory Board, exists to oversee and manage the building in all respects, while also doing its primary job of providing for services to seniors of Lopez Island. The board meets the first Tuesday of each month at 10 a.m. in Woodmen Hall. Your attendance is welcome.

Lunch is served Wednesday and Friday. Woodmen Hall also hosts many seniors’ activities during the day that are diverse and interesting.

My role as the advisory board’s appointed stage development representative has required a good deal of interaction with both organizations. I can’t say enough about what a positive experience this has been as I worked with both boards.

Many volunteers have contributed their time and skills over these past few years. We continue to need help, as the building becomes complete. Please consider Woodmen Hall in your charitable efforts. Woodmen Hall rents at very reasonable rates to generate revenues which are 100 percent in support of operating the building and to provide senior services.

Our community can look forward to supporting senior services while renting the Hall. For information about renting, please contact Jan Lewis at 468-2884.
