Compiled with information from Lopez Island Library
COVID hasn’t stopped the Lopez Island Library from hosting a plethora of online virtual events this summer. Book clubs, concerts, discussions and more can all be attended from the comfort of your own living room. For more information, check out lopezlibrary.org.
Watch The Village Square
The Village Square Program Series is a collaborative effort between the Lopez Island Library and other community organizations that make up the Lopez Recovers Network to keep the people of Lopez informed about the local responses, relief efforts, and recovery movements taking place in reaction to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The June 19 video focuses on the re-opening plans and new procedures for two establishments that center around the exchange of second-hand goods: the Lopez Island Dump’s Take It or Leave It (TIOLI) services and the Lopez Island Thrift Shop, as well as any updates from other local businesses about how their services have changed.
We will also hear from the Lopez representative on County Council, Jamie Stephens, about what’s been going on at the county level. And as always, there will be an opportunity to ask questions of the panelists during the final segment of the program.

Summer Reading 2020: Now – Aug. 21
Despite the unusual circumstances of the Summer of 2020, the Lopez Library is still pursuing the goal of empowering people of all ages and abilities to utilize our collection and services to develop a love of reading and books and words. As always, during the summer months, we’ll be offering summer reading challenge sheets, catered towards each reading age group, to encourage and keep track of what you are reading this summer. In addition to reading prompts, each challenge sheet also has prompts for getting outdoors and pursuing other creative and educational activities. And as always, there will be prizes for all participants!
Additionally, the Library is offering free weekly take-home activity packets (in lieu of live programs) with hands-on creative and playful activities for families. To learn more about these and to register for a packet, please follow this link.
The purpose of the Library’s Summer Reading initiative is to encourage a love of reading and learning while school is out. Reading is a fundamental skill, and children who read for pleasure are known to do better in school based on many metrics. We are all more willing to spend time doing things we enjoy, and in turn we get more out of them.

Living room concerts
The Lopez Library presents a virtual concert series, featuring local musicians performing online from their living rooms to your living rooms! Watch the concert on the Lopez Island Library’s Facebook page (even if you don’t have a Facebook account).
To watch the concert, head to the Lopez Island Library Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/LopezLibrary/, on the date and time of the concert, for an evening of entertainment. You do not need to have a facebook account to watch the performance.
Join the Lopez Island Library at 7 p.m. this Thursday, June 25, for a virtual concert with Kip and Stanley Greenthal. Watch from the comfort of your own home!

Summer activity packets for families
This summer, instead of in-library family programming, the Lopez Library is offering weekly hands-on activity packets that families can bring home and enjoy each week for six weeks this summer.
Each packet will contain age-appropriate craft projects and supplies, prompts for getting outside, and encouragements for reading, writing and playing with words every week! Weekly Activity Packets will be available to pick up on Wednesday afternoons in the Community Meeting room, from July 1–Aug. 6. There is no cost to participate.
To register for an activity packet for your family, register at https://forms.gle/tFVHJTigZuspot1L9. Registrations can be received anytime during the six weeks the packets are available.
We are sad to not be offering our regular weekly family programming at the library, but due to safety concerns around gatherings and sharing supplies, we are switching to this take-home version instead. These grab-n-go activities will hopefully provide some similar moments of creativity and active learning with your family throughout the summer. Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions.
Supplies made possible by the Friends of the Lopez Library and a grant from the Lopez Thrift Shop.
