On Sept. 29, at 8:13 a.m., San Juan County issued the certificate of occupancy for the much-anticipated Village North Apartments, officially opening the doors for tenants to move in immediately. The milestone marks the culmination of years of planning, fundraising and community collaboration to bring critically needed affordable housing to Lopez Island.
“This is so much more than paperwork,” said Wes Green, executive director of Housing Lopez. “It represents vision, grit, and the power of community coming together to provide safe, warm homes for our neighbors. To see residents move in right away is deeply emotional for all of us.”
The final push to secure occupancy was a collaborative effort, supported by county officials, Housing Lopez staff and countless community members. San Juan County Council Member Jane Fuller played a key role in helping expedite the final approval, ensuring vulnerable islanders would be housed before the onset of fall rains.
True to Lopez Island tradition, the move-in reflected the spirit of neighborly support. Thanks to community volunteers, new residents will find handmade crocheted pot holders, dish cloths and a set of “welcome home” cookies in their homes along with healthy cleaning supplies. Islanders volunteered trucks, time and household items to help furnish apartments. Together, the community ensured each new tenant felt not just housed, but welcomed.
Feedback from new residents has been overwhelming. Many expressed gratitude and relief, sharing comments such as:
“I can’t believe I get to sleep here tonight.”
“I haven’t been warm in winter for more than seven years.”
“I feel so well cared for.”
Village North Apartments provide affordable, long-term rental housing for individuals and families, addressing one of Lopez Island’s most pressing needs. The project embodies Housing Lopez’s mission to create lasting solutions that keep the island community strong, diverse and thriving.
“This project has always been about more than housing — it’s about dignity, stability, and belonging,” Green said. “We are proud to share this moment with the entire Lopez community, whose generosity and commitment made Village North possible.”
