Art, food, music and land preservation…Lopez style

In the gloaming of the day, the frogs sing their song of spring. As the trees leaf out and we reconnect with the earth through our gardens and woodland walks, the Odlin South Preservation Project gets a boost from The Lopez Artist Guild.

Saturday May, 23 there is an art auction benefit to raise funds and awareness in order to prevent the loss of the stately 103 acre parcel of land adjacent to Odlin Park on Lopez known locally as Odlin South. The evening will start at 6:00 p.m. with previews of original 8”x8” canvases created especially for this event by well known local artists including Linda Barton, Debbie Collins, Rita Elliott, Danah Feldman, Ginny Furmanski, Deborah Gallegos, Linda Lee Hudson, Anne Whirledge-Karp, Linda Koenig, Christa Malay, Aurore Maren, Joe Niederman, Ron Norman, Jean Peterson, Michael Peterson, Tamara Shane, Sylvia Chesley Smith, Jan Sundquist, Michael Terra, and Leaflin Winecoff. This fun evening will also include an informational presentation on the land, the project and local flora and fauna by resident experts.

Odlin South is on the north end of Lopez Island nestled between Odlin Park and private lands. It is the largest undeveloped piece of property left on the north end. This parcel serves many important ecological functions with its class two wetlands, unique aspen grove and undeveloped wild habitat. The flat silty wetlands filter water from neighboring lands and Ferry road, which are headed to the marine environment via Odlin Park. The wetlands also aid in the slow recharge of the aquifer in a water short area and provide habitat for many wild creatures being squeezed out by the rapid ‘developement’ of the island.

It is our intention to acquire this land in its entirety and re-unite it with Odlin Park. Your show of support, both physically and financially is vital to our success as we work with our state and local government officials to regain possession of these parcels.

Acquire beautiful original art, enjoy food, beverages and live music, get informed… and help preserve this large beautiful piece of land on the north end of Lopez for the generations to come.

The event is sponsored by the Lopez Community Center, and the Lopez Artist Guild as well as the Odlin South Preservation Project. Tax deductible donations for Odlin South Preservation Project are being accepted by the San Juan County Land Bank at this event or can be sent to 350 Court St #6, Friday Harbor, WA 98250.
