Hello, my name is Michael Rosekrans. I have lived on Lopez Island for four years, and my wife, Emma Ewert, grew up here. Together, we are proud to support the establishment of a Lopez Island Parks and Recreation Department (“Lopez Rec”).
As a career youth environmental educator and a recent father, I deeply understand the importance of providing rural families with access to a healthy, active lifestyle. Local parks and recreation departments play a vital role in ensuring equitable access to a wide range of opportunities — from organized and intramural sports to access to nature and outdoor spaces.
Rural communities like ours often face challenges in offering these resources due to limited funding. A publicly supported, tax-subsidized recreation department can help close this gap — ensuring that all members of the Lopez community, regardless of income or background, can benefit from the many services such departments provide.
Across the country, rural communities have seen meaningful benefits from strong parks and recreation programs: improved public health, safe spaces for youth to build life skills, strengthened social connections and the creation of local jobs. These departments are not just about recreation — they act as hubs for wellness, learning and community building. They help reduce social isolation, support economic growth and provide inclusive opportunities for all ages.
We urge our fellow community members to support this essential initiative for the well-being and future of Lopez Island.
Sincerely,
Michael Rosekrans
