Indoor Swim Center progress

Friends of Lopez Island Pool (FLIP) is excited to provide this update on our progress toward building an all-ages, indoor Swim Center for all of San Juan County.

Thanks to the generosity of our community, FLIP has raised or received commitments of $5.2 million from more than 900 supporters! Incredibly, 209 donors contributed $157,464 during our year-end challenge, exceeding our goal by 26%! We are so grateful for your support and the ongoing enthusiasm for this project. The Swim Center will provide our children a safe place to learn to swim, our seniors and adults with local warm-water therapy and low-impact exercise, and our families and friends with an indoor, year-round swim center—something especially needed during these cold winter days!

FLIP made great progress this past year. We hired our first executive director, who is focused on our capital campaign. We, along with the Lopez Island School District and our neighbors, are awaiting final state approval of the water system design. This system will ensure a reliable source of high-quality water for the school district, our neighbors, and the pool. Upon receiving approval of the water system, FLIP will submit the design to complete our building permit application previously submitted to San Juan County. The School-to-Pool trail, located along the water-line easement, will provide a direct and safe link between the school and the pool. We have reached agreement with the Fisherman Bay Sewer District for the pool to connect to their system. All the facility design and building plans are complete; a general contractor is engaged: WE ARE SHOVEL-READY!

2021 will be a big year for FLIP. We continue to pursue community support, government grants, foundation support, corporate gifts, and leadership donors. Our community Swim Center is indeed close to becoming a reality. Your continued generosity and support will get us there. Together, we can do this!

Imagine the Possibilities…For Safety. For Health. For Wellness. For the Islands!

With much gratitude,

The FLIP Board of Directors
