Scores of islanders and visitors alike delighted at the Trashion-Fashion Show at Lopez Center, Aug. 12.  Ensembles were created from materials as varied as cat food bags and building plans, burlap, garbage bags, disposable plastic tablecloths and bird netting.

The event, designed to humorously demonstrate the art and value of recycling, repurposing and reusing, celebrates creation of the new Lopez Solid Waste Disposal District. LSWDD represents the advent of community-based waste management operating in keeping with Lopez values.

Dozens participated as models or worked behind the scenes to bring the fashion show and silent auction to Lopez Center. Models ranged in age from two to almost 80 years old.

One visitor to the island was heard to repeatedly and gleefully tell her bicycling partner, “This is over the top, just over the top.”

All proceeds support the LSWDD. A measure asking Lopez voters for tax support for the new district will be on the ballot this November.
