The Lopez track team competed against seven other squads at the enviable Lynden Christian School facility on April 21. Despite a quarter of the team absent due to other activities, the 15 Lobos present performed at a high level, placing strongly in several events amidst crowded fields, with numerous athletes posting personal best performances. Betty Burt took top honors in both shot put and discus, Kiley Williamsen placed second in high jump (at the same height as the winner, but having had one more miss at a lower height), and fourth in the 100-meter dash. Seamus O’Bryant took third place in both 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles; Huck Henderson placed third in discus and fifth in shot put; Beau Spreine took fourth in the 110-meter hurdles and fifth in the 300-meter hurdles; and Ava Bennett placed seventh in the 400-meter run.
A highlight for the Lobos was the 4×100 relays, both teams placing third overall (men: Henderson, Ian Cankusic, Elija Somers and Benjamin Stephenson; women: Bennett, Willemsen, Iris McClean and Lulu Velazquez). Lady Lobos posting personal bests included Bennett (400-meter), Burt (discus), McClean (javelin), Velazquez (1600-meter), Lola Woodington (shot put) and Fatima Garcia (shot put and discus). Men performing their best included Spreine, 110-meter hurdles; Stephenson, 100-meter dash; Cankusic, javelin; and O’Bryant, 110-meter hurdles.
Coach Shane Patrick complimented the Lobos afterward, remarking that they would have undoubtedly scored even more personal and team wins had the Lobos not had to leave the meet early to catch the 8:15 ferry.
The Lobos have two more meets before post-season begins with the NorthWest 1B/2B District Championship at Coupeville, May 16.
