Lopez Island track and field shines at Trojan Twilight; Golf set to resume play

Lopez Island High School athletics was in action this past week as the track and field team delivered a strong performance in Bellingham, while the golf team prepares for a key matchup against Friday Harbor following spring break.

Track and field

Lopez Island athletes turned in a solid showing April 3 at the Trojan Twilight meet, highlighted by a win and several personal-best performances.

Junior Kylie Willemsen led the Lobos, winning the high jump with a personal-best clearance of 5 feet and adding a fifth-place finish in the 100-meter dash in 13.58 seconds. On the boys side, Seamus O’Bryant paced Lopez in the hurdles, placing fifth in the 110-meter hurdles in 18.70 and sixth in the 300 hurdles with a personal-best time of 47.39. Teammates Elija Somers and Beau Spreine also recorded personal bests in the 110 hurdles.

Benjamin Stephenson took seventh in the 800 meters in 2:11.05, while Jack Bullock and Francis Jones posted personal bests in the 1,600. Huck Henderson led the Lobos in the field events, finishing 10th in the javelin with a personal-best throw of 121 feet, 2.5 inches, and added marks in the discus and shot put.

For the girls, Betty Burt placed sixth in the shot put and eighth in the discus, while Iris McClean and Rosa Charnley contributed in the javelin. Lopez also placed 10th in the boys 4×100 relay as the team continues its early-season progress.

Golf

Lopez Island’s golf team did not compete this past week and will return to action April 16 against Friday Harbor from 3-5 p.m. at Lopez Island Golf Club. The Lobos will look to build momentum as the season continues.
