Local youth invited to Untold Youth Summit

On Friday, Nov. 14, 9th and 10th grade youth from four local counties will unite to learn how to influence tobacco, alcohol, and drug prevention in their communities. The seventh annual Untold Youth Summit will be held at Swinomish Tribal Youth Center in La Conner, Washington from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The mission of Untold 7 is to teach critical thinking, leadership and communication skills to youth. These skills can assist youth in increasing self confidence, rejecting tobacco industry marketing and peer-pressure, and becoming community prevention advocates.

Summit activities include: Didgeridoo-making and playing that may potentially break a world record; skills workshops hosted by Motivating the Teen Spirit and the Pacific Institute; team-building activities and competitions led by local college students.

Nationally renowned presenter Kenya Masala will be leading group activities throughout the day. Kenya is a community and youth development consultant, teacher, and curriculum specialist. He leads exciting group drumming sessions to inspire learning and community building, for people of all ages!

Summit organizers include Swinomish Tribal Community, United General Hospital, Whatcom County Health Department, Island County Health Department, San Juan County Health Department, Northwest Educational Service District 189, Lummi Tribe, Nooksack, Upper Skagit Tribe, American Cancer Society, and American Lung Association of the Northwest.
