Michael David Rainey

Michael David Rainey, 59, of Lopez Island, WA, passed away on Saturday, October 25, 2008. There will be a Graveside Service on Monday, November 3, at 3:30 PM at the Union Cemetery. There will be a potluck to follow at the First Christian Church fellowship hall in La Grande, at 902 Penn Avenue. All who knew Mike are welcome. Arrangements are being handled by Loveland Funeral Chapel and Crematory.

Michael was born on March 23, 1949, in Mountain Home, Idaho to David Gerald Rainey and Lucille Irene (West) Rainey. He attended K-11th grades in Lancaster, CA and graduated 12th grade in Huntington, OR.

Mike joined the Navy soon after high school during the Vietnam War and served aboard the USS Longbeach as an E3 Gunners Mate Missile. After his tour of duty he was honorably discharged from the Navy.

He married high school sweetheart Linda (Shaver) Pierce on June 16, 1975. Linda had a son, Steven (Pierce) Rainey and they had a second son, Kevin Michael. The two were married for 26 years and divorced in 2004, but remained friends.

Mike worked for Oregon Dept. of Transportation in La Grande, OR, on the Bridge Crew and Stripping Crew for 20 years before retiring. After retirement he moved to Lopez Island, WA, where his bother, Curt, and step-brother, Bob, reside. Mike worked for Lopez Sand and Gravel until his death. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved camping, hunting, and fishing.

He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his sons, Kevin Michael (Kimberly Ann) Rainey, of La Grande; Seven David (Katrina Elaine) Rainey and their daughter Megan Savanna of Portland; Linda Diane Rainey-Mennich, ex-wife and mother of children of La Grande; brothers Bob Rainey of Lopez Island, WA; Rodney Joel Rainey of Boise, ID; and Curtis Wayne Rainey of Lopez Island, WA.

A wake on Lopez will be held a place and time to be determined later.
