The Tour de Lopez: cycling with a view of paradise

Saturday April 25 opened with some cloud cover, but as the day progressed, the more than 1000 cyclists who visited the island for the annual Tour were treated to sunny, bright skies and moderately cool temps, which were perfect for cycling. Surrounded by beautiful scenery and friendly co-cyclists, the Tour participants were treated to a catered lunch by the Bay Cafe on the Lopez Village Green.

Becky Smith, of the Lopez Chamber of Commerce, commented, “We actually served 1,225 lunches that day for the barbecue. It was a very successful event. And I was thankful for the beautiful spring sunshine.”

Chamber of Commerce members and community volunteers have worked diligently throughout the last several months, preparing for the large event. The last week is always a flurry of activity, which includes painting old bicycles which are used as markers for the cyclists, preparing rest stations and snacks, as well as working on the over 1000 lunches which are served to the Tour-goers.

The annual event, which was sold out several months in advance, raises needed funds for the Lopez Chamber of Commerce. The funds are used to provide upkeep and maintenance to the bathrooms, showers, and park area of the Lopez Village Green, as well as for other projects.
