Submitted by LSWDD board and staff

Thank you, voters, for approving the Lopez Solid Waste Disposal District levy for 2017. 80 percent of the voters voted yes! We appreciate this community and your support.

LSWDD is excited to announce a new job position for our Lopez Island Dump. LSWDD is seeking interested parties to apply for the District Manager position. Five years ago, when LSWDD was first formed, there were five founding members on its all-volunteer managing board. Of those founders, Larry Eppenbach and Page Read retired December 31, 2014, and the remaining three — Bruce Creps, Dan Post and Sandy Bishop — will retire December 31, 2016. The new district manager will assume many of the tasks of the founding board members and will free up the remaining board members to focus on governance and long-term planning. Hiring a District Manager will allow David Zapalac, facility manager to stay focused on operations and will increase our capacity to concentrate on all the intricate moving parts of the Lopez Island Dump.

Basic functions of the district manager include working with our exceptional staff of David Zapalac, Facility Manager; Gary Lawrence, Administrator; Nikyta Palmisani, training, outreach and education coordinator; Ron Shively, driver; and a vast number of volunteers. Other basic functions of the position: provide leadership and guidance to advance LSWDD’s mission; serve as board liaison; foster a collaborative work environment; supervise staff; manage the financial, legal and regulatory affairs of LSWDD; ensure all accounting and reporting is done in an accurate, timely and auditable manner; ensure all county, state and federal laws and regulations related to employment, financial reporting and public records are adhered to; and be responsible for community, business and agency relations, program and project development, and strategic planning in collaboration with other staff. Work is performed independently under the general direction of the board, referring unusual or sensitive issues to the board for resolution.

LSWDD has a commitment to operate the best little zero waste facility around, and we appreciate the community’s support. If you are interested in this position please see the full job description and application at:
