Kayak crime, business burglary and disappearing dinghy | Sheriff’s Log

The San Juan County Sheriff’s office responded to the following calls:

Aug. 16

• A Lopez Island deputy responded to a dog running at large in the village. The dog’s owner was advised of the complaint. No enforcement action was taken.

• An Orcas Island woman contacted a deputy regarding a domestic dispute.

• Orcas deputies responded to a report of domestic dispute in Eastsound.

Aug. 17

• A Lopez Island deputy stopped a motorist after he saw him driving without wearing his seatbelt on Fisherman Bay Road. The deputy issued the driver a ticket for failing to wear his seatbelt and for expired vehicle registration.

• A deputy contacted a Lopez Island resident regarding a trespassing complaint. It was determined a subject went on the property so she could check on items she had left while working there. The property owner confirmed the claim and that no crime took place.

• A Lopez deputy responded to a reported burglary at a local business. The investigation continues.

Aug. 18

• A deputy responded to a theft on Orcas. There was a kayak missing from the North Beach area. There are no suspects at this time.

• A pedestrian versus a car accident was reported on Front Street. Deputies found the pedestrian and driver in a coffee shop, talking. The pedestrian was examined at the scene and declined aid. They exchanged information and went back to their coffee.

• A theft was reported at the San Juan County Fair. The suspect was caught and held by a witness, until deputies arrived. The items were recovered and the booth owner declined to press charges as she is always travelling and couldn’t come to court. The suspect was ejected and banned from the fairgrounds.

• An Orcas resident came to the station to report identity theft. The subject had received notice that his “account” had been sold to another bank and he owed additional money, but he has never heard of either business. He is working with his bank to correct this and needed a police report.

• An Orcas deputy conducted a traffic stop on Orcas Road. The driver was issued an infraction for speeding 45 mph in a 25 mph zone.

Aug. 19

• Lopez Island deputies responded to a reported domestic violence call. There was found to be no crime committed.

• A citizen turned in credit cards and a driver’s license to a sheriff’s deputy in Friday Harbor. The items were entered into evidence for safe keeping.

• A Lopez Island deputy stopped a motorist on Fisherman Bay Road after he saw him driving while not wearing his seat belt. The deputy issued the driver a ticket.

• A tourist observed a male prowling a truck in Friday Harbor. He took a picture of the truck and followed the suspect getting a picture of the suspect. He was recognized as a Friday Harbor resident.

• A deputy conducted a traffic stop on a speeding motorcycle on Orcas. The driver was issued an infraction for speed and not having a license plate mounted to the motorcycle.

• A Lopez Island deputy received a report of an intoxicated driver aboard a ferry bound for Lopez. The deputy met the ferry when it arrived, and discovered the intoxicated subject was not operating the vehicle.

Aug. 20

• A vessel was cited for San Juan County Code day use mooring at the Eastsound County Dock.

• King’s Market in Friday Harbor reported they had a shoplifter in custody. The shoplifter was contacted and issued a permanent “no trespassing” letter for both King’s Market and Market Place.

• A Lopez Island deputy stopped a vehicle on Center Road. The driver, a local man, was subsequently issued an infraction for driving without a license, no insurance, and speeding 60 mph in a 45 mph zone.

• Friday Harbor deputies responded to a father/son domestic dispute. After an investigation, the father was taken into custody and is awaiting a court hearing.

• A report of weapon noise was reported in Friday Harbor. The deputy contacted the reporting party and was unable to locate the source of the shooting. The reporting party said that a bullet had gone onto their property and hit one of their trees.

• A deputy was dispatched to a residential burglary in the Friday Harbor. The caller returned from work and found several items missing. The investigation continues.

Aug. 21

• A deputy was dispatched to a disturbance at an Eastsound business. Further investigation lead to the arrest of a male subject who had a local warrant in Eastsound. The suspect was cooperative and the arrest was made without incident. The suspect was transported via patrol boat to Friday Harbor.

• A Lopez Island deputy stopped a vehicle and cited the driver for speeding on Port Stanley Road.

• A deputy responded to a found property report at a local business in Eastsound. The item was secured and will be held until the time limit to claim the property has expired.

• Lopez Island deputies arrested a local woman on an outstanding warrant. The subject posted bail and was released.

• Lopez Island deputies contacted a Lopez woman at her home and took her into custody on an outstanding San Juan County District Court bench warrant. She was transported to the station where she was processed and released after posting bail.

• A Lopez Island deputy was asked to assist a state agency in locating and recovering a piece of specialized medical equipment. The item was tracked to Orcas Island where it was given to an Orcas deputy for return to the state agency.

• A Lopez Island deputy was sent to investigate a possible trespass in progress at a Lopez residence. The property owner observed someone moving around on the property on live feed security cameras. It was found to be the caretaker that was on the property to do a security sweep.

• A Friday Harbor resident violated a court order. The case is being referred to the prosecutor.

• An Orcas deputy conducted a traffic stop on Olga Road. The driver was issued an infraction for failing to stop at the stop sign and given a verbal warning for not having her operator’s license with her in the car.

Aug. 22

• A deputy took a report of an apparent vehicle prowl at an Eastsound address. A tool kit and its contents was found missing from the back of a pickup. The belongings lost are an estimated $5,000 value. The case is being investigated.

• A Lopez man reported that his dinghy and outboard motor were missing from the Mackaye Harbor area. The dinghy had been found adrift off Iceberg Point earlier by a commercial fisherman. The dinghy was reunited with its owner. It likely was taken by the high tide during the night.

• Deputies responded to a welfare check on Crane Island and discovered a deceased person.

• A Lopez man reported parts stolen off of his bicycle while it was parked in a Lopez Island recreation area.

• A Lopez deputy was called to investigate a collision between a runaway boat and trailer that struck four unoccupied parked cars at the Hunter Bay Boat Ramp. No one was injured in the mishap but property damage was extensive.
