Lopez Island School District recently received a technology grant from Best Buy electronic stores for $2,500.

Middle School teacher Huck Phillips was the official recipient of the "Best Buy Teach" award, and the funds will be used to further middle and high school video and recording programs, including the purchase of technology equipment to allow more students to become involved in the programs.

"The money from this grant will really help us be more technologically involved with video and recording activities and will allow us to send students 'out in the field' to gather video images and create recordings," said Phillips.

One example of such technology is pod-casting. Pod-casting is a rapidly advancing technique of utilizing computers and recording technology to record radio-type broadcasts over the internet. Lopez Middle and High School students are offered this elective and other opportunities to explore possible career or vocational technology and communication avenues, as well as further enhance their basic communication and presentation skills, while having fun broadcasting and recording and producing video and recorded productions. Lopez Schools grant manager Jeanna Carter, who wrote the grant, said, "This grant was fun to write and we are pleased it was funded. It will directly benefit students."
