Bellingham-Friday Harbor Passenger Ferry Service
June 17, 2008 · Updated 12:32 PM
Travelers between San Juan Island and Bellingham now have a new option: the 149-passenger Victoria Star 2. With a grant from the U.S. Federal Transit Administration, the Port of Bellingham has arranged for a winter ferry service to be provided by Victoria-San Juan Cruises.
The service schedule consists of Monday-Friday departures from Bellingham Cruise Terminal at 7:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. and departures from Friday Harbor at 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. The trip time is one hour and forty minutes. The one-way fare will be $10 with discounted rates for children and frequent travelers.
The Victoria Star 2, which is powered by bio-diesel, is able to make the crossing in almost any weather and offers a stable ride for passengers. Amenities on the boat include a snack bar with full beverage service and room for bicycles and bulky store purchases.
The service corresponds with the Whatcom Transportation Authority bus schedule, allowing commuters coming from San Juan Island to catch a bus and spend the day in Bellingham. Rental cars are also available at the dock for just $20 for the half day.
For mainland residents who are traveling to Friday Harbor, the service allows for a full eight hours on the island to work, shop, or for recreation.
Reservations are not required. For more information about the service, contact Victoria-San Juan Cruises at (360) 738-8099 or visit the website www.whales.com.
