Hazardous Waste Collections
June 17, 2008 · Updated 12:18 PM
This fall's hazardous waste collections, sponsored by San Juan County's Solid Waste Division, will be held on the following islands:
Saturday, Sept. 24, Orcas Island Solid Waste Transfer Station, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Sunday Sept. 25, Lopez Island Solid Waste Facility, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Your island's solid waste facility attendants can provide you with printed guidelines to help you classify and safely handle hazardous products. For more info see the county's webpage at www.co.san-juan.wa.us/publicworks/solid-waste/solid-waste.html.
A minimum fee of $6 will be charged for up to 120 pounds of hazardous waste; quantities over that will cost an additional $.05 per pound. Since post-1979 latex paints are not considered hazardous (i.e. lead-free), they can be air-dried or solidified by mixing with sawdust or other absorbents for regular solid waste disposal. A $2 per gallon fee will be charged for latex paint brought to these collections.
Businesses are required to pre-register by calling 370-0503.
