It's Contra Dance Time!
June 17, 2008 · Updated 12:09 PM
Put on your dancing shoes and your swingiest clothes--it's time for a contra dance!
Visiting caller Kathy Anderson will lead her trademark flowing, quirky contra dances and lively square dances on Wednesday, June 15th, 7:30pm at Lopez Center. Admission is $6 for adults, free for kids 15 and under. Live music will be provided by Bottomfeeder--Matt Hummel, Carol Noyes, Dave Marshall, and Clyde Curley.
Contra dancing is pure Americana, and about as much fun as you can have and still be legal. All dances are taught. Two tips for beginners: look in your partner's eyes to avoid getting dizzy, and don't hesitate to ask anyone of any gender to dance with you!
Kathy Anderson hails from Dayton, Ohio, and has been calling and writing dances since 1982. She came to dancing through playing the old-time banjo and piano, and soon earned a reputation for her able teaching, her sense of humor, and her fun, challenging dances. She calls frequently with the popular contra dance band, Wild Asparagus, and has called dances from Alaska to Florida and everywhere in between, even in the Caribbean and Europe. She helped found the Big Scioty Barn Dance in Columbus.
This event is sponsored by the Lopez Center for Community and the Arts. Refreshments will be provided. For information call 468-3263.
