The Lopez Center for Community and the Arts will be hopping Sept. 27, when Lopez celebrates the center’s fourth anniversary with an all-island potluck and auction.

“We’re thrilled by the number of people who have volunteered to help,” said Mac Langford, chairman of the Lopez Center. “The word’s out — this is going to be a great party!”

A fabulous array of auction items is pouring in from the community, according to David Moody, chairman of the birthday event. “Dinner parties for eight, tennis lessons, a weekend getaway in Seattle — the auction items are guaranteed to spark some spirited bidding. And the wonderful Harry Potter quilt … well, there’s a lucky kid out there somewhere!”

Auctioneer Robert Herrmann will bring his signature style to the event.

The auction is part of the “Bridging the Gap 2003” campaign, which will raise money to cover the Lopez Center’s operating expenses and continue subsidies for concerts, plays, lectures and meetings. “The subsidies keep the rental costs down, and that keeps ticket prices affordable,” Langford said. The progress of the fund-raising campaign will be charted on the “Bridging the Gap” sign located in front of Lopez Center.

The potluck and preview starts at 6 p.m.; the auction will get rolling about 7:30 p.m. Islanders are asked to bring a main dish or a salad; beer, wine and soda pop will be available at the cash bar.
