The Lopez Island Historical Society has named Mark Thompson-Klein as its new executive director, effective July 15.

Thompson-Klein brings business management experience to the museum, along with 10 years’ experience designing exhibits and managing projects for museums and zoos, including Pacific Science Center and the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium.

“This is a new direction for us,” society President John Goekler said. “We’re very excited about the possibilities. Mark brings administrative and fundraising skills, plus design and exhibit skills, and he’s a terrific event organizer. Plus he’s a history and museum buff.”

Thompson-Klein's appointment culminated a six-month search process. The museum’s Search Committee reviewed 17 applications from around the country, then held personal interviews with five candidates. Two applicants emerged from the committee interviews to meet with the entire Historical Society board. Thompson-Klein was selected to be the new executive director.

This is a busy time for the Lopez Museum. The historic Port Stanley School is opening to the public next month after a five-year restoration effort, and several new exhibits and programs will be offered over the coming months. In addition to adding new staff, the museum is also seeking volunteers to work as docents and collection assistants, and to help restore artifacts.
