Economy: Jobless rate drops in San Juan County

Local unemployment rate 5.6 percent

San Juan County’s unemployment rate dropped to 5.6 percent in March — below the state rate of 7.4 percent and the national rate of 5.8.

San Juan’s rate tied for third-lowest in the state. Whitman was lowest with 2.6 percent unemployed, Asotin was second with 5 percent, and Olympia tied San Juan for third.

In March, there were 6,250 people in the San Juan County labor pool; 350 were unemployed. In March 2002, there were 6,030 people in the local labor pool and 360 were unemployed.

San Juan County’s unemployment rate was 7.1 percent in February and 5.9 percent in March 2002.

Retail sales up and down in San Juans

Taxable retail sales rose 1.4 percent during the fourth quarter of 2002, according to the state Department of Revenue.

In San Juan County, overall taxable retail sales were down 0.3 percent, while retail trade was up 1 percent.

All told, there were almost $63.8 million in all taxable retail sales in San Juan County in fourth quarter 2002, down from $63.9 million in fourth quarter 2001. There were $18.8 million in retail trade in the fourth quarter 2002, up from $18.6 million in fourth quarter 2001.
