February 6
Judge Stewart Andrew presiding
Two $600 bench warrants were issued for Donny J. Columbus, 19, after review hearings stemming from charges of theft 3, reckless driving and no valid operators license.
A $1,100 bench warrant was issued for David Oliver Hursh, 18, after a review hearing on a charge of minor in possession.
A charge of domestic assault 4 against Richard Morgan Foley, 20, was dismissed.
Don Brett Haws, 30, entered a change of plea on a charge of assault 4. He was sentenced to 365 days in custody, with 360 days suspended. He was given credit for two days served and was fined $1,690.
Andrew Dean Johnson, 22, was sentenced to 30 days on charges of possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and violation of probation. He will be given day-for-day credit for time served in in-patient treatment. He was also sentenced to five days consecutively on charges of driving while license suspended 3.
Orcas Fire Calls
Jan. 25: Emergency personnel responded to a private residence near the golf course to assist a man who had fallen. There was no transport required.
Jan. 26: A trash can fire adjacent to the Orcas Public Library was reported by a passerby who removed the can and extinguished the fire. The fire call was canceled and the scene turned over to the Sheriff for investigation of arson.
A chimney fire was reported and fire personnel dispatched to a Rose Street residence. The call was canceled when it was determined it was not an out of control fire.
Jan. 27: EMS personnel responded to a private home to assist a female with a possible overdose of non-prescription drugs. The young woman was taken to the Orcas Island Medical Center for evaluation and subsequently transported via airlift to St. Josephs Hospital in Bellingham.
A single vehicle rollover accident was report by a fire district officer. The occupants were able to extricate themselves and denied any injury. The call was canceled.
Jan. 31: Fire personnel were dispatched in the morning hours to the new Senior Center following a fire alarm activation. The call was canceled when it was determined there was no fire.
Feb. 5: EMS personnel assisted an Orcas resident experiencing chest pain by transporting him from the Orcas Island Medical Center to the airport by ambulance for transfer to St. Josephs Hospital.
An Eastsound woman was evaluated by responding EMS personnel after reporting feeling weak and dizzy. She was transferred by ambulance to the Orcas Island Medical Center for further examination.
A North Beach resident was aided by a paramedic and EMT after he reportedly fell. He was uninjured and didnt require further aid.
Sheriffs Office
The San Juan County Sheriffs Office reported responding to the following calls last week:
Jan. 28: A 20-year-old Seattle man was driving north on Dolphin Bay Road. Road conditions were poor due to compact snow and ice. The vehicle attempted to go down a steep grade and the driver lost control. The vehicle slid off the roadway and came to a rest against a small grove of alders. There were no injuries listed for the driver and a passenger. The driver was cited for not having proof of insurance.
Feb. 1: A deputy observed a 19-year-old Eastsound man driving on Terrill Beach Road. The deputy had prior knowledge the driver had a suspended drivers license. He pulled over the driver and found marijuana and drug paraphernalia on his person. He was arrested and released.
Feb. 2: A vehicle was traveling northbound on Wold Road when the driver failed to negotiate a sharp left turn. The vehicle left the roadway, struck a corner marker, went over an embankment and hit several trees. All the occupants of the vehicle were gone when deputies arrived. One passenger sustained a dislocated shoulder and sore ribs. Two other occupants were later treated for minor cuts, and they provided conflicting reports on who was actually driving. After interviewing other people, deputies took into custody a 27-year-old Friday Harbor man for driving under the influence. The man refused to take a breath test.
A 16-year-old Friday Harbor boy was pulled over for a traffic infraction on Park Street at 1 a.m. The deputy talked to the juvenile and observed that he was in possession of two bottles of wine. He was arrested for being a minor in possession and released to his parents. The juvenile said he and two friends took the alcohol from his employer.
Feb. 4: A Friday Harbor man reported that his vehicle parked at the upper parking lot at the Port of Friday Harbor was broken into. Stolen were a flashlight and a World War II fatigue jacket.
A San Juan Island woman said she used a Mount Vernon contractor in November to lay down a new carpet. After the contractor had done this work, she paid $1,114 in advance for a new bathroom floor. The check was cashed three days later, but the work wasnt done. She contacted the business, Skagit Valley Flooring and Siding, several times and was told the business was having employee problems. She went by the business in January and discovered it did not have a business license, nor was it bonded. The contractor has now left the area.
Jerrys Mall on Spring Street reported a possible attempted burglary. A rear glass door had been broken. There was no sign of entry, however.
A 49-year-old Eastsound man was arrested for assault 4, domestic violence.
Feb. 5: A Friday Harbor man reported that someone broke the rear window of his pickup while it was parked on University Road and took several items, including a Browning over and under shotgun, a pellet gun, and a Sony portable compact disc player. Also, a small amount of cash was taken.
Feb. 7: A Friday Harbor man reported that a suspicious person entered a vehicle outside his apartment complex. The vehicle involved did not belong to the individual. The suspect, a 29-year-old man with no address, was arrested. He had two no-bail extraditable warrants.
Friday Harbor Market Place reported that a juvenile male placed several candy bars in his coat and attempted to leave the store without paying. The 16-year-old Lopez boy was taken into custody for shoplifting, theft 3 and released.
Feb. 8: After a single vehicle traffic accident on Beaverton Valley Road, the driver, a 28-year-old San Juan Island man, was arrested for driving under the influence and released.
Superior Court
Feb. 6: Bail was set at $175,000 for Jane Marie Carter, 39, also known as Jane Marie Johnson and Jane Marie Sarich, of Orcas Island. She is being held as a fugitive from justice because of several felony warrants out of Washington County, Ore. on charges of driving under the influence of intoxicants, driving while suspended, giving false information to law enforcement officers, failing to appear 1 and failing to appear 2, and reckless endangerment.
Vincent Orlondo Aldrete, 19, entered a change of plea on charges of possession of stolen property and assault 4. He was sentenced to 20 days in custody on the first charge, and 15 on the second charge, with the sentences to run concurrently. He was given the option to serve his sentence on the county work crew. He was also fined $1,538. An original charge of felony robbery 2 was dropped.
Charles McReynolds, 34, of Friday Harbor pleaded guilty to a charge of theft of a firearm. A charge of trafficking in stolen property was dropped. He was sentenced to 60 days in custody, with credit for 16 days already served. Thirty days will be converted to 240 hours, while the remaining 14 days may be served in home detention. He was also fined $1,760.
A complaint for damages was filed by plaintiff Thomas Allen against defendant Joseph McCarty. The case involves a traffic accident that occured last July.
