Why should I care what happens beneath the surface of the sea? a lecture given by Dr. Debbie Kelley, Department of Oceanography, University of Washington.
Amazing things live on volcanic rifts deep in the ocean off our coast and elsewhere: Is this where life on earth began?
This it the first in a series of four lectures. The lectures will be held 7:30 p.m. every other Thursday atthe Commons at the University of Washington Labs at Friday Harbor.
All lectures are free and open to the public.

Join the local San Juan Islands Audubon Society field trip on Lopez Island. Meet at Lopez ferry landing at 7:45 a.m. Expect to see golden eagles, peregrine falcons, trumpeter swans, northern shrikes, wintering ducks, and most of the 85 species recorded on the Christmas bird count on Lopez Island last month. The January San Juan Island Chamber of Commerce meeting will be held 5:30 p.m. Jan. 22 at the Friday Harbor High School Library. Superintendent Steve Enoch will speak about San Juan Island schools and show us around a little.

The Friday Harbor Womens Study Club meets 1 p.m. at the Grange in Friday Harbor. Steve Simpson, Director of the Port of Friday Harbor will speak on The Port Districts Role in Transportation for San Juan Island.
24 January
North Sound Regional Support Network meets 1:30 p.m. in the conference room of the Carnation Building, 117 N. First St., Suite 8, in Mount Vernon. The Network consists of Island, San Juan, Skagit, Snohomish and Whatcom counties and exists to plan develop and implement a coordinated system of crisis response, community services, residential care and resource management for consumers of mental health services in the five northwest counties. 25 January
The San Juan Island Medical Guild will host a reception for the new doctors, Michael Wingren and Greg Moran, 5:30 p.m. at the Inter Island Medical Center. Refreshments will be served.
1 February
Teen Book Club, 6-7 p.m. First meeting to discuss The Fellowship of the ring, by J.R.R. Tolkien. Meetings will be held first Friday of every month. Membership is free and the friends of the Orcas Library will provide copies of the book to the first 15 members.
2 February
Reception to honor West and Sue Davis upon their retirement from Saint David's Episcopal Church, 4-6 p.m. held at the church. After 36 years in the ministry, they will begin retirement here on San Juan Island. Persons in the community who would like to join parishioners at this event are cordially welcome. Yoga Classes offered by Island Rec
Island Rec yoga classes that begin at the end of the month will be meeting at a new location, in the Great Room of the Sustainable Technology Building, located on Mullis Street. This new location provides a quiet and warm atmosphere.
Gentle Yoga is designed for participants who may have some limits to mobility due to age, lifestyle or injury meets on Tuesday afternoons. Healthy adults new to Yoga may choose a Level 1 class offered two mornings a week and one evening a week.
Level 2 Yoga, a class for students actively practicing meets on Monday evenings. Five and six week sessions are being offered beginning Jan. 29. Deadline for registration is Jan. 23.
All Classes include movement and postures, relaxation, breathing practices and meditation. Jean Turner, is a certified Instructor of Integral Yoga and Integrative Yoga Therapy and been teaching for over 15 years.

Learn to be a babysitter
An American Red Cross Babysitting class is being offered by Island Rec for people 11 and older. Deadline to register is Jan. 25. This nine-hour class will meet on Saturdays, Feb. 2 and 9 from 11 a.m. to 3:30 pm.
This course will teach the responsibilities and outline the qualities of being a good babysitter. The class covers decision-making, supervision, safety, emergency situations, basic first aid, routine dressing, diapering and feeding scenarios.
The class consists of fun activities, videos and lively discussion to real life problem-solving situations. Participants will receive a babysitters handbook, a basic first aid kit and upon successful completion become certified in ARC Babysitting and Infant and Child CPR.
