Lucas Franco, of Lopez Island, has been awarded a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship.

Only two students were chosen to represent Western Washington. The Ambassadorial Scholarship program allows graduate students to further international understanding by serving as ambassadors of goodwill to a host country.

Lucas is pursuing a master’s degree in Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Oslo in Oslo, Norway. Last winter, through Seattle University’s International Development Internship Program, he had the opportunity to work with Care International in San Salvador, El Salvador. That experience enabled him to participate this summer, with other aid workers, in an International Aid and Development Summer Studies Program at the University of Oslo.

In June, Lucas graduated Magna Cum Laude from Seattle University, with a major in Political Science, earning Departmental Honors, and a minor in Latin American Studies.

His parents are Alberta Plate and Gary Franco of Lopez Island.

Lucas sends greetings and thanks to all in the San Juan Islands community who have encouraged and supported him. To learn more, go to: http://talesfromanordicexchange.blogspot.com.
