Old friends

by Colleen James

Two old friends out for a stroll

Stopped at the shore of Life River

They sat for a while to reminisce

Sharing laughter and a few tears

They decided to cross the river

Eager to get on with it

The stepping stones appeared to be stable

A wink and they were off

Halfway across

One of them stumbled

Fell into the river and drifted away

The other contemplated joining her

But that wasn’t really an option

She continued with care

And was embraced at last

In the love-filled arms of her future
