Lopez Grange hosts fall festival and benefit concert

A market, and music and movies! Oh my!

The Lopez Grange will host a Fall Festival and Benefit Concert with a performance by Misner and Smith on Sept. 30.

“We have a full day of events planned,” said Sue DuMond. “Come for some of it, or come for it all!”

Beginning at 10 a.m. and ending at 2 p.m. the farmers market will showcase local island farmers and feature apple pressing. Also starting at 10 a.m. and running until 4 p.m. is a quilt show, hosted by Enchanted Quilters. This show will include a display of the quilters’ blankets and a barn quilt unveiling which will remain on the North outside wall of the Grange. The permanent barn quilt is a representation of an individual quilt block painted on wood, not a real quilt.

All day long, you can participate in a raffle for a barn quilt donated by Enchanted Quilters, the winner will be announced during the evening’s concert. Tickets will be $5 a piece or three for $10. A limited number of raffle tickets will be available for sale at the day of the event or through Enchanted Quilters. All of the money raised will go to the Grange repair and repaint project.

“In the May, 2015 issue of the Washington Grange News there was a front page article on a barn quilt that had been unveiled at the Mt. Valley Grange. That barn quilt sure looked good displayed on that Grange Building,” said Jodie Snapp. “It brought to mind the various notions that quilts raise: comfort, home, family, community and love of place.”

The Enchanted Quilters of Lopez Island has had a long history of quietly making and presenting comfort quilts to community members experiencing difficult times.

“We have always believed these quilts express a perpetual hug of support,” said Snapp.

It was with this thought in mind that the Enchanted Quilters decided to fund the construction of a barn quilt to be presented to the Grange.

“We hope that this ‘visual hug’ will help bring awareness to our precious Grange building,” said Snapp. “Quilts are often that comforting background in our lives, we hope this barn quilt will be the same for the our beautiful Grange building.”

At 7:30 p.m., Home on the Grange presents a benefit concert for the Grange of Misner and Smith.

For several years, DuMond has presented a concert series primarily held at the Grange, called the Home on the Grange. Now a new Grange member, she is hosting this special concert by Bay area folk/rock, Americana duo Misner and Smith will directly benefit the Grange’s repair and repaint project.

Tickets to the concert are $18 for adults and $8 for youth ages 8-17. They are available at Pachamama Apothecary, Blossom Grocery, online at Brown Paper Tickets and at the door.

The Grange will also be hosting a monthly indoor movie starting Oct. 18 at 7 p.m.

“The summer outdoor movie series held on the Grange lawn this summer was a smash success,” said organizers. “We will be resuming our movie series just in time for Halloween with the original 1963 classic, ‘Night of the Living Dead.’”

Movies will continue to screen on the third Wednesday of every month thereafter.

Over the years, the Grange building’s ongoing maintenance has been dependent on the volunteer work of its membership, and funded by income generated by rentals, and fundraising events. A recent building inspection was conducted by All Islands Home Inspection, and as a testament to the memberships hard work and dedication over the years, gave the structure overall high marks for a building of it’s age. It however, revealed some crucial and costly exterior issues that need to be addressed sooner rather than later.

As a result of the building inspections findings, the Grange is currently raising funds to help repair and replace numerous exterior areas that show the presence of soft wood, a complete exterior paint job, replacement of a leaking shed roof, repair of the crumbling foundation’s mortar, and a few other exterior repairs.

The online fundraiser for repair and repainting of the Grange building can be donated to by visiting https://goo.gl/3rJrua. More than 25 percent of the Grange’s goal has been met.

“We are attempting to raise $15,000 by October 25th for our 114-year-old building,” said DuMond.
