New KLOI show

Once Upon an Island: Tales from Lopez is an enchanting hour of storytelling with islanders young and old. Alie Smaalders and Lorrie Harrison visit with local characters, old-timers, philosophers and others who drop by to share personal tales of this place we all call home. Airing Tuesday, November 25 7 p.m. and Sunday, November 30 at 4 p.m. Guests: Steve Horn and Stanley Greenthal on Nov. 25 and Mary Harris on Nov. 30.

Inter-Island Sustainable Living Weekend

In celebration of sustainable living, come one, come all to the Lopez Community Center for Inter-Island Sustainable Living during the weekend after Thanksgiving.

Contra Dance Hoedown on Saturday, Nov. 29, 7 p.m. Enjoy high-spirited partner dancing. Families and all ages welcome. Instructions. First-timers encouraged. $10 Single, $15 Family, $5 individual student.

Sustainable Living Thanksgiving Community Breakfast on Sunday, Nov. 30, 8-10 a.m., featuring Dona’s famous wood oven fired breakfast pizza. Adults $10, children 5-12 $5. R.S.V.P.

Sustainable Living Winter Gardening Forum on Sunday, Nov. 30, 10-12 a.m., Lopez Community Center (donations only). Eliot Coleman, of “Four-Season Harvest: Organic Vegetables from Your Garden All Year Long” fame, will present a live, big screen, telecast. And to help Eliot bring it a bit closer to home, Katie Penche of Seattle Tilth and Engela Wanerstrand of Sustainable Ballard will – live and in person – share their Northwest Maritime winter gardening adventures and experiences.

San Juan

Land Bank meeting

The Land Bank Commission will meet on the third Friday of the month in November. The November 21 meeting will be held in the Council Hearing Room at the San Juan County Legislative Building, 55 Second Street, Friday Harbor, San Juan Island. The meeting begins at 8:30 a.m. A Public Hearing on the Proposed 2008 Amended Stewardship Management and Maintenance Expenditure Plan III is scheduled for 8:45 a.m. Public testimony will be heard. The Public is welcome at every monthly Land Bank Commission meeting.
